Enhancing awareness on energy conservation among the general public and inculcation of attitudes towards building up of an energy conservation culture is an area under the purview of ECF and ECF has been involved in such programmes from its inception. Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority carried out a series of programmes in line with that in the year 2005. Further, taking the message of the importance of renewable energy as indigenous energy resources was also given prominence in the programmes in the year 2005.
School Programmes
School
programmes are mainly targeted at preparing the generations
to come to face the energy conservation needs with a
better focus in the future and also to pass the message
of energy conservation to the parents through school
children. Such programmes were held in 25 schools in
the year 2005 and more than 8000 school children benefited.
Along with these programmes, feedback from participants
were obtained by way of a questionnaire and certificates
and cash awards were given to the winners.
Exhibitions
Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority participated education and trade exhibition with the view of promoting energy conservation and renewable energy development among various sectors. World Energy Council Exhibition held parallel to the World Energy Council Executive Assembly held from 6th to 9th September 2005 at the BMICH was the highlight of 2005. Representatives from 97 member countries of the World Energy Council graced this occasion where the inauguration was by Hon. Susil Premajayantha, Minister of Power & Energy. The concept of Dendro thermal power generation was the theme for the exhibition stall of the ECF and the international gathering was impressed by the initiatives that have been taken in line with the Dendro power development in the country.
Techno-2004 exhibition, the most significant engineering
exhibition was held in October and ECF used this event
to show working models of biomass power plants which
paved the way for a large gathering of engineering technocrats
to view the concept of dendro power generation in action.
A similar exhibition was held in Industrial Technology
Institute and the same concept was exhibited.
Among the other exhibitions where ECF participated were Kandurata Aruna 2005, Mahapola Educational Exhibition, Walapane Prabodaya 2005, Dakshina Abhimani Exhibition, etc. ECF took the message of energy conservation to the general public, students and personnel involved in different fields of activities.
Industrial Workshops
Industrial workshops are held in order to train staff employed in industries and other commercial establishments on energy conservation and also to take initiatives for energy management programmes in their establishments. Tea industry is a major area where such programmes were conducted in the year 2005 and tailor made training sessions focusing importance of energy conservation in tea industry were carried out in Henfold Estate, Abbostsleigh Estate and Ceytea, Agarapathana. Being the major agro based industry in the country, impact from energy conservation in tea industry will be significant in the national context. Health sector is a major electricity consumer in the country and energy conservation programmes were initiated in this sector through workshops for the health sector staffs and programmes were also carried out in the Department of Animal Production & Health.
Mass Media Programmes
Mass media, both electronic media and print media are a good channel for taking the message of energy conservation to the general public as a large number of population can be addressed through one programme. In the year 2005, Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority conducted series of programmes through the Dinamina Sinhala newspaper and Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation. A series of articles on different aspects of energy was published weekly in the Dinamina newspaper. Most of the theoretical and practical information relevant to energy was discussed through this series of articles. Parallel to this, a weekly newspaper quiz was published and prizes were given to the winners. For the winners of the weekly newspaper quiz, a quiz programme was conducted as a ceremonial occasion in collaboration with the Associated Newspaper Ceylon Limited. "Shilpa Madulu Yata" is the programme conducted through the SLBC and a quiz programme was also included along with that programme too, where good response from students was received.
