Ensuring maximum utility from an amount of energy spent,
is very important to reduce the amount of energy developed
at the generation side. This is an important concern in both
thermal and electrical energy systems and in the midst of
energy being generated by spending foreign exchange, this
aspect is a matter to be considered in the context of the
country's economy.
Programmes in the area of energy conservation and management
conducted by the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority lead to short term
and long-term benefits towards the improvement of energy efficiency
services sector in the country.
Energy Audits
Energy
audits were conducted by the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority
in the year 2005 focusing tea industry, manufacturing
industries, apparel industry, office buildings, etc.
and the energy saving potentials identified were ranging
from 20% to 40%. In tea industry, electrical energy
saving potential was 28% and the thermal energy saving
potential was 20%. In the apparel industry, the electrical
energy saving potential was 20% and lighting and air
conditioning are the major areas to be focused. Chiller
efficiency improvement could be highlighted as a potential
energy saving measure in commercial buildings and the
percentage electrical energy saving in such places was
in the range of 25%.
Comprehensive energy audit reports and the guidelines provided in walk-through energy audits paved the way for bulk consumers to tackle their immediate energy problems and also to develop frameworks to establish long-term measures in the respective consumer sectors. Inculcation of energy consciousness among employees from managerial level through work-floor employee level in the places where energy audits were carried out will support with necessary human inputs in the energy conservation applications in respective organizations.
Energy Services through ESCOs
Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority initiated expanding energy services programmes
towards the reach of a wider clientele through promoting
Energy Services Companies in the year 2004. In the year
2005, ECF had the opportunity to carry out energy conservation
programmes in collaboration with ESCOs. It was a landmark
in the energy management activities in the country and
12 such companies are working hand in hand to the upliftment
of the energy efficiency services of the country and
this an example of combined public private partnership
for effective energy conservation programmes in the
country.
Energy Services Companies were involved in the sustainable
guarantee facility programme after it was officially
launched in the year 2005. Programmes with ESCOs will
be further expanded with the implementation of SGF assisted
projects in the year 2006.
Boiler Tuning
Boilers and air heaters are used for generation of thermal energy in industries. For efficient energy generation, boilers and air heaters should be tuned properly and in the normal practice boiler tuning should be done once in 3 months. Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority carries out tuning of boilers with sophisticated flue gas analysing instruments and in the year 2005, boiler tuning was carried out at regular intervals on annual package and also on one time basis. Unilever factories at Colombo and Agarapatana are under the annual package and under the boiler tuning exercises carried out on individual basis, tea industry was a major area where efficiency improvement was noteworthy.
Award the for most Energy Efficient Establishment
Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority carries out selection of the most energy efficient establishment in order to make example for others on importance of implementing energy efficiency projects. The Committee on Energy Conservation of the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority finalizing the evaluation for the previous year recommended that measures should be taken in order to improve the standard of projects. Based on this, ECF took measures to develop the scheme through making it a biennial event and also combined the programme with a similar one conducted by other agencies. As an outcome of these initiatives, selection of projects carried out in the years 2004 and 2005 will be carried out in 2006.
