Energy is a commodity, which is of prime importance for human
life especially in the context of the modern society where
the needs of the public reflect diverse facets. It is also
an indicator of the living standard of the public and an important
parameter of the industrial and economic growth of the country
as well. Sri Lanka, especially being a country scarce of energy
resources, ensuring the availability of firm and reliable
energy in the right form at the right time for the right use
is very important in a broad perspective with respect to the
country's economic stability.
In ensuring the above, assessment of energy needs at regular
intervals, compilation of energy data, establishment of specific
energy consumption with respect to production and services
and development of the trends in relation to that and reviewing
such at certain intervals are of extreme importance. Further,
compilation of energy data helps to have a record of energy
use in different sectors and compare those with the global
systems. These will obviously support energy planners to prepare
necessary plans by allowing informed decisions to be made.
Major activities carried out in support of this functional
area in 2005 were Analysis of Energy Sector Performance, Energy
Database and Demand Side Survey of Industries.
Analysis
of Energy of Energy Sector Performance
Sri Lanka Energy
Balance published by the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority was
the key document of energy data for policy planners, researcher
and other various sub-sectors, for carrying out activities
on energy planning and related research & development
work. Identifying the importance of this, Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority took initiatives to develop this document to a level
of a comprehensive profile of the country's energy situation.
It is presented through a new format and this novel compilation
was named as An Analysis of Energy Sector Performance.
In the year 2005, An Analysis of Energy Sector Performance
2003 was compiled and published.
Energy
Database
Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority is the focal point organization for energy sector data and as such, a comprehensive database was developed identifying this necessity. The annually updated database will support policy level activities among other things, with clear image of the energy sector trends, consumption patterns, etc. This was updated with the 2003 energy data and Energy Data 2003 was published in a CD-ROM under this programme.
Energy
Digest
Energy Digest is the ready reckonner of energy sector statistics and Energy Digest 2003 giving all the important statistics in the energy sector was compiled and published in the year 2005, as the printed envelop which enclosed the CD-ROM containing the energy data base.
Demand
Side Survey
Demand side survey, which was started in the year 2004 in support of the energy data was continued in the year 2005. All the energy consumption data with respect to each energy source used by industries were included in this and amounts of monthly fuel oil, diesel and biomass consumption, their respective costs, electricity consumption, maximum electricity demand and respective costs were among the parameters collected in the survey. Analysis of the data was carried out in the year 2005 and it is expected to complete the analysis and compile the final report of the survey statistics in the year 2006.
