1.

Recently Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority was conducted comprehensive Energy Audits at the following government institutions.

  • Sri Lanka Broad Casting Corporation
The head office of Sri Lanka Broad Casting Corporation (SLBC) is situated at independence square, Colombo 07. The total annual electricity consumption is about 1.6 x 106 kWh and the average annual electricity bill is about 24.5 million rupees. According to the recommendation of the Energy Audit, the annual energy saving potential in SLBC is 27% and the corresponding annual cost saving is approximately 6.7 million rupees.
  • General Hospital - Kandy
A similar Energy Audit was done at General Hospital in Kandy. The total annual electricity consumption is about 3.88 x 106 kWh and the operating Maximum Demand is 1150 kVA. The average annual bill is about 59.9 million rupees. The saving potential of the recommendation is 17% of the total energy and the corresponding annual cost saving is approximately 10.36 million rupees.

2.

The Bio mass Energy Development Project started under the assistance of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and technology development in line with following 4 areas associated with biomass technologies was carried out.

  1. Efficiency improvement of biomass utilization in lime kilns.

  2. Fuel switching with replacement of fuel oil usage with biomass in brassware manufacturing industry.
The technology used here is gasifier technology and through making the process easy to control and thereby reducing losses, the system is improved. ECF carried out a pilot projects in the Digana and pilimathalawa area and it came out with successful results.

  1. Quality improvement in agro produces processing with solar assisted biomass dryers.
Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority in collaboration with the University of Moratuwa developed a dryer using biomass and when the sunlight is available solar energy can also be used for the same dryer.  Through this, solar energy can be productively used and meanwhile quality improvement of products can be done through gradual drying operation using biomass.  The designs and pilot projects carried out for pepper showed good results where quality of the production could be maintained and improved.

  1. Development of wood chippers for different volumes of biomass consumption.
In efficiency improvement in the application of biomass, gradual feeding is a necessity and with long sticks of wood such gradual feeding cannot be obtained.  Chipped wood is necessary in that respect and in order to facilitate availability of chipped wood for the industry, ECF developed wood chippers catering to different wood chip applications.
