The concept of Energy Habitats is based on the concept that villages isolated from the national grid will be developed as model villages capable of sourcing their total energy needs within the habitat. Improved energy efficiency at all levels, use of modern technologies and new approaches to livelihoods will be combined to realise the objectives. The habitats will be transformed to a level at which the communities can effectively enter country’s the economic mainstream.
Hiru Saviya
The Hiru Saviya project of the SLSEA aims at providing solar powered electricity for rural villages that have no access to the national grid. The first solar powered village was built in Galgamuwa of the Monaragala district and was vested in the public by the Government of Sri Lanka in June 2009. This project has successfully provided electricity to over 260 houses and the village school and solar powered street lamps. The speciality of this project is that it has provided solar powered electricity to the indigenous Veddha community in Rathugala.
The Project was funded by the Government of India.
