SCHOOL PROGRAMMES

Energy conservation in the domestic sector is an important area in the national energy conservation move. The inculcation of attitudes and creation of awareness among general public on the energy conservation is of utmost importance. School children are an important target group in the process of channeling the energy conservation message to the general public. A programme collaboratively with Ministry of Education has been initiated to enhance the capacity of school children on energy conservation and renewable energy.   A newspaper quiz programme based on articles published in newspapers is carried out targeting school children.
School Curriculum Development activities and Establishment of National Resource Team to train the School Science TeachersEnergy management and the renewable energy were included as subjects in the Science curriculum in the Year 2007, with the goal of committing the future generation to use renewable energy and management. Since the new curriculum encourages the students to engage in activities in the learning process, it could be effectively exploited as a powerful medium to inculcate the habits of energy management and using of renewable energy sources in their day to day lives.

This is three steps training programme, first step- National resource team will be trained, second step-In-Service officers will be trained, Third step –science teachers will be trained.

THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A RESOURCES TEAM TO TRAIN THE SCHOOL SCIENCE TEACHERS

With the intention of providing a scientific and proper understanding of the Energy Usage and manage energy in a more efficient and fruitful manner, the subject of Energy Management & Renewable Energy has been included in the school curricular in the year 2007.

By avoiding the weakness in the previous science curricular, a special emphasis was given to the School Science Curricular which facilitates Student Centered and Competency Based Activities even for the subject of Energy Management and Renewable Energy. However, the Science & Mathematics Division of the Ministry of Education (MOE) found that the aims and the objectives of including the subject of Energy Management and Renewable Energy have not been achieved as expected mainly due to the dearth of knowledge among the science teachers on the subject and the planning and preparation of relevant activities according to the given curricular. The training of Science Teachers nearly 10,000 numbers in all districts is a target which could not be achieved in a short period of time. Hence the NEED for Training of Trainers (TOT) on the subject and provide necessary technical expertise has been identified as a highest prioritized program. Consequently the Science Division of the Ministry of Education commenced a series of training program to train In-Service Officers and get them to train the Science Teachers throughout the country. Accordingly, it was agreed that the Ministry of Education to provide training resources and the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA) provide the technical expertise and bear  the cost and the financial sponsorship of the program.  The Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment of Resources Team to train the School Science Teachers was signed between Dr.Krishan Deheragoda, Chairman, The Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority and Mr.M.M.N.Dayarathna Bandara, Secretary, Ministry of Education in 28 September 2009.

The Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority firmly believes that the sponsorship for such a program would be in the national level as through school children it will be much easy to disseminate the awareness and the knowledge of Energy Management and inculcate them to practice to use energy management tips in their day  to day life in order to use ENERGY in more effective and efficient manner.

As mentioned in the MOU, that the above officers of the Education Sector were assigned to design practical components which could be included in to the school curricula aiming at committing future generation to use renewable energy and mange energy in their day to day life.  The speciality of this assignments were that those training components are unique to the available resources such as human , financial, level of education, effectiveness & efficiency to the respective areas of those participants.

Ms.B.W.G.Dilhani-Assistant Director of Education (Science),Mr.Vipula Kulathunga-Assistant Director of Education(science)-Eastern Province, Mr.Saman Kulasuriya-Communication Specialist and  Mr.Vijitha Ekanayaka-Engineer(Energy Management)of the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority were present for the training program. Mr.W.D.Wijithapala and Mr.R.W.G.N.Ranawana rendered a yeoman service as the Resource Persons for the entire program while the necessary technical know-how was provided by the SLSEA Staff.

By considering the importance of the practical nature and the doable of these assignments MOE and SLSEA appropriately selected the RIGHT PERSONS as the Resources Persons, Mr.W.D.Wijithapala and Mr.R.W.G.N.Ranawana of the Wayamba Province Zonal Education Education office. Mr. Wijithapala is a multi skilled,   innovative researcher in the field of Science Innovations.  He started his professional career as a Science Teacher in 1972 continued his career as a Science Teacher in several schools and was actively involved in the innovations of the field of science.   The Commonwealth Association of Science, Technology and Mathematics Education (CASTME) award in 1997 for low cost “Audio Scope” as a alternative to “Oscilloscope”, Presidential Award , Sri Lanka Inventors Commission  and Special Commendation Certificate by the National Sciences Foundation for  the  Inventions of  “The Multi Purpose Visual Presenter” in 2007,and Patent  Certificate for The “Multipurpose Visual Presenter”  are few of his  landmarks. The kind co-operation, the knowledge sharing and specially  the humane touch of Mr.Wijithapala and his long lasting assistant, Mr.Ranawana who gave their fullest support during this important workshop were highly praised by all the participants.
