Energy Efficiency Improvement in Tea Industry

Energy efficiency improvement activities in tea factories are coordinated with Tea Research Institute (TRI).  More than 100 tea factories are in active involvement in energy efficiency improvement activities.

To implement an effective energy efficiency programme to reduce the burden on national energy system while enhancing the tea sector competitiveness are the main objectives of this programme. tea sector is the single biggest fuel wood consumer. It is estimated that the electrical energy saving potential is as high as 86 million kWh per year or a financial saving of LKR 800 million per year at the current electricity tariff. at Present average specific electrical energy consumption (SEC)of tea sector is  0.63 kWh/kgMT. We try to reduce  it to 0.43 kWh/kgMT Through the Tea Sector Capacity Building programme.

Recently Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority conducted capacity building programmes in Tea sector.

(g) Impacts

Greening  Sri Lanka Hotels project

A collaborative effort to achieve energy, water and environment conservation in hotels, specially focusing the SME sector. Target of the project is 20% reduction in energy and water consumption and 20% reduction of waste in 360 hotels. Project is carried out under the Switch Asia programme.

Project partners are Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, Responsible Tourism Partnership programme under Ministry of Tourism, Travel Foundation – UK and Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority.

Energy Efficiency Improvement in Water Supply & Distribution

National Water Supply & Drainage Board (NWS&DB) is the single largest electricity consumer in the country.

Annual energy saving potential in water supply and distribution is 18.9 GWh. 2.8 GWh/annum has been saved through the activities carried out so far.

Through the energy efficiency improvement projects implemented.
