The SLSEA would establish the first ever grid connected solar energy park in Baruthaknda of Hambantota, which also promises to be the first solar energy park in Asia. This is constructed with the grants of the Government of Japan and the Government of Korea. The total capacity of the project is 900 kW and amounts to USD 14.5 million. The Japanese component amounts to USD 10 million and the Korean component amounts to USD 4.5 million. The project spans an extent of 20 acres of the 50 acre energy park area demarcated for the purpose.
The goal of the project is to provide clean energy through solar power generation. The project is estimated to generate 558,600 kWh per annum and this is capable of offsetting 860 tonnes of CO2.
The performances of this project would greatly eliminate the risks of pioneering project developers, lending agencies and equity investors and would undoubtedly spark off the commercial scale solar power development in Sri Lanka. Being the first of its kind, the project will provide most of the knowledge required to operate a commercial scale solar power generation project. |
