MAKE A CUP OF TEA

How to make a cup of Tea?

(a) A typical cup of tea should hold 150 – 180 ml of tea, but the majority of boutiques serve well below 140 ml.
However, the price of a cup of plain tea varied from Rs. 7.00 – Rs.10.00, irrespective of the volume served!
(b) As long as the boutiques remained open, the hearth, the immersion heater or the LP gas stove was seldom turned off or extinguished. This reduces the time taken to prepare tea and the subsequent serving time, but it wastes a substantial amount of energy.
(c) Although each cup of tea contained only 170 ml of tea, it required around 200ml of water for preparation, permitting evaporation loss.
(d) Following are the quantity parameters for mass tea making in boutiques.
  • Weight of tea – 1 kg of black tea per 800 cups of strong tea
  • Weight of sugar – 1 kg per 100 cups
  • Weight of  Milk Powder – 1 kg per 100 cups of milk tea
(e) Following are the quantities of energy used in the process.
  • Electricity – 0.021 units (kWh) per cup
  • LP gas – 1.95 grams per cup
  • Fuel wood – 0.33 grams per cup

How can you make an ‘energy efficient’ cup of tea?

The water should be boiled to the boiling point in a closed vessel like a kettle, for, if water is boiled in an open vessel, a considerable volume would evaporate, resulting in considerable energy loss.

The preferable flavour could be accomplished through a simple formula, where in the number of required tea spoons should equal to the number of tea cups plus one. For instance, if you need to prepare 6 cups, add 7 spoons of tea into the brewing pot.

The tea should be brewed in the pot for 5 to 10 minutes, depending on your preference as to whether it should be slightly strong or vice versa.
Use burners sparingly. Don’t keep them on for hours without use. This costs you a lot of energy and money.

If properly made, a cup of tea should be sold as follows

The selling price for a cup of plain tea should be
  • Rs. 1.40 – if the fuel is firewood
  • Rs. 1.46 – if the fuel is LP gas
  • Rs. 1.52 – if the fuel is electricity
The selling price of a cup of milk tea should be
  • Rs. 8.28 – if the fuel is firewood
  • Rs. 8.33 – if the fuel is LP gas
  • Rs. 8.40 – if the fuel is electricity
