HOW CAN I SAVE ENERGY?

LANDSCAPING

A well-designed landscape not only can add beauty to your home but it also can reduce your heating and cooling costs

Growing trees around your home reduces heat energy a great deal. Typically, newly planted trees will begin shading windows in their first year and will reach your roof in years 5-10.

Why pay for so much for fans and air conditioners?

Be trendy. Grow trees and see the difference for yourself.  The following graph indicates the ambient temperature difference in two houses in the suburbs of Colombo , one shaded by trees and the other on a bare land.

Your overall landscaping strategy should depend on the zonal climate. A house in Nuwara Eliya and a house in Anuradhapura will need different landscaping strategies.

Planting shrubs, bushes, and vines next to your house creates dead air spaces that insulate your home. Plant so there will be at least 1 foot (30 centimeters) of space between full-grown plants and your home's wall.
